Diabetes is a serious disease that can cause many different health problems, including heart disease, kidney disease, blindness, and amputation. Diabetes is often called the “silent killer” because it can go undetected until it causes serious complications.

Men are at a higher risk for diabetes than women. One reason diabetes is more prevalent among men than women may be that men are less likely to see their doctor regularly and get tested for diabetes. In addition, if the disease is not causing any symptoms yet, they may not know they have diabetes. Type 2 diabetes, the most common form of diabetes, is often asymptomatic in its early stages. This means that many men could have diabetes and not even know it. Some signs and symptoms of diabetes in men include:

  1. Fatigue. Diabetes can cause fatigue in men for many reasons. High blood sugar levels can damage the cells that produce energy in the body. This can make you feel tired and fatigued. Diabetes can also interfere with the absorption of nutrients from food, which can lead to feelings of fatigue. If you are experiencing fatigue along with other symptoms of diabetes, it is important to see a doctor to get evaluated.

  1. Weight gain. When the body becomes resistant to insulin, which causes the blood sugar levels to spike, one can start to gain weight. This is because the body starts to store excess sugar as fat. As a result, people with diabetes often experience significant weight gain.

  1. Increased urination (especially at night). Diabetes can damage the nerves in the bladder. This can lead to an overactive bladder and more frequent trips to the bathroom. If you are experiencing these symptoms, it is important to see a doctor and get diabetes diagnosed and treated as soon as possible. Left untreated, diabetes can lead to other serious health problems.

  1. Thirstiness. High blood sugar levels can cause excessive urination, which leads to dehydration. Thus, if you are experiencing thirstiness and a dry mouth often, it could be a sign that you have diabetes.

  1. Hunger. Hunger is one of the main signs of diabetes. There are a few reasons for this; when your blood sugar levels get too high, your body tries to get rid of the sugar by dumping it into your urine. This makes you thirsty, so you drink more fluids, which in turn dilutes your urine and causes even more sugar to be dumped out. The extra sugar in your blood also interferes with the way your brain signals hunger and fullness. So even if you’ve just eaten a big meal, you may still feel hungry because your brain isn’t receiving the right signals.

  1. Blurred vision. Blurry vision is one of the most common side effects of diabetes.

  1. Erectile dysfunction. One of the most common signs of diabetes in men is impotence, or erectile dysfunction. This occurs when blood sugar levels are high, which can damage the blood vessels and nerves that control erections.

Diabetes can be a silent disease, so it is important to be aware of its signs and symptoms including the following: blurred vision, excessive thirst or urination, weight loss without dieting, feeling tired constantly. A person who has diabetes may not realise that he or she has diabetes because many people don't have classic symptoms. Even if they do have classic symptoms such as increased thirst or hunger and frequent urination, they may attribute them to something else like a virus or ageing rather than diabetes. When signs occur together with other risk factors (obesity in middle age; history of gestational diabetes; family members with type 2 diabetes), it is a good idea to take a blood glucose test to see if you have diabetes.

If you have diabetes, or are at risk for diabetes, talk to your doctor about ways to keep your blood sugar levels under control and prevent complications.
