Homocysteine test is used to measure the amount of homocysteine in the blood. Homocysteine is a kind of amino acid, a chemical substance the body uses to make proteins. Normally vitamins, in your body, like B12, B6, and folic acid break down homocysteine and change it into other substances that your body requires. The high levels of homocysteine indicate that the body is deficient in vitamins B6, B9 (folate) or B12. This test may be used to monitor those who have heart diseases and run the risk of a heart attack or stroke and for those who may develop of Alzheimer's disease. The test is also performed for new-borns, infants and young children, if there is a suspect of homocystinuria, a rare condition that prevents the breakdown of proteins.

To take the blood sample, a tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins and it becomes easy to collect the blood. The skin is cleaned before inserting the needle in the vein in order to prevent bacteria from entering. Needle is inserted into the vein of the arm and the blood sample is collected in the vacutainer.
Other than folate and vitamin b deficiency other risk factors include: low thyroid hormone levels, psoriasis, kidney disease, certain medications, genetics, etc.
Some of the complications of high homocysteine levels may include: osteoporosis, atherosclerosis, venous thrombosis, heart attack, coronary artery disease, stroke, dementia, Alzheimer?s disease, etc.
Yes, elevated levels of homocysteine can be genetic, called homocystinuria, an inherited disorder that stops the body from processing essential amino acid, methionine. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein.
