TORCH IgG & IgM test is a panel of tests for detecting the presence of specific infections in pregnant women or newborns.

The TORCH 10 IgG or IgM Test

A TORCH IgG & IgM test detects diseases that can occur due to the following parasites or viruses:

  • Toxoplasma gondii
  • Rubella
  • Cytomegalovirus (CMV)
  • Herpes simplex
  • Other (HIV, varicella, hepatitis viruses, parvovirus)

These diseases can spread from the mother to the fetus. Generally, this transmission occurs during pregnancy or delivery period.

The TORCH 10 IgG IgM test detects the presence of an infection that can happen due to the four types of TORCH pathogens. Your body fights these infections by producing antibodies like IgG and IgM. The TORCH IgG & IgM test detects these antibodies in your blood.

If both antibodies (IgG & IgM) are present in the blood, there is an ongoing infection. On the other hand, the absence of both them indicates no infection. A positive IgG and negative IgM result mean an old infection that is cured already. Similarly, a negative IgG and positive IgM signifies a recent TORCH infection.

Why Should You Get Tested?

The most significant reason to test for TORCH infections is to safeguard any risk to the newborn. If you overlook these infections, there might be cases of congenital disabilities in infants.

A doctor will always recommend this test for pregnant women in most cases. Also, women with recurrent abortions should undergo the TORCH 10 test.

faqFrequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

The TORCH IgG & IgM test is for pregnant women to detect the presence of infections in their bodies. In addition, this test is also conducted in newborns to detect the presence of a disease caused by various parasites. The test aims to detect these infections by measuring the IgG and IgM antibodies in the blood that are created in response to infections.
Since the TORCH test is for pregnant women, the doctor may perform these tests during a woman’s first prenatal visit. The health practitioner may also recommend this test if the patient shows symptoms of a disease that do not line up with common pregnancy symptoms.
TORCH is an abbreviation for five infections that can prove fatal - Toxoplasma gondii, Other (HIV, hepatitis viruses, etc.), Rubella, Cytomegalovirus, Herpes simplex and Syphilis. If left untreated, the infections can target the placenta in a pregnant woman and may lead to a host of congenital disabilities. Some of these include: Cataracts Deafness Intellectual disability (ID)  Heart problems Seizures  Jaundice Low platelet levels
When the immune system detects a foreign particle in the body, it starts to release various antibodies to counter them. The IgM antibodies in the blood signify that the infection is currently present in the blood or it is relatively recent. Hence, the presence of these antibodies in a newborn’s blood may point to an infection. On the other hand, IgG antibodies point toward past infection or immunity to the same.
During pregnancy, an infection may spread throughout the body and target the placenta, leading to congenital disabilities in the child. In severe cases, this infection may also lead to complications like:  Preterm birth Loss of pregnancy Delayed development of the foetus  Physical malformations A TORCH 10 IgG & IgM test may help detect these infections early and allow the doctor to suggest an effective treatment plan.
