    Frequently asked questions

To take the blood sample, a tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is asked to make a fist. This helps in the buildup of blood filling the veins and it becomes easy to collect the blood. The skin is cleaned before inserting the needle in the vein in order to prevent bacteria from entering. The needle is then inserted into the vein in the arm and the blood sample is collected in the vacutainer.
The common health conditions associated with aging include hearing loss, cataracts, and refractive errors, back and neck pain, osteoarthritis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, depression, and dementia.
Osteoarthritis is commonly found in older people. It starts when cartilage begins to become old, torn and starts to wear away. The cartilage is responsible for preventing friction between the joints as it normally pads up the joints. When the cartilage is damaged, the joints rub against each other causing friction which results in stiffness and pain
The symptoms of arthritis include lasting joint pain, swelling in joints, stiffness in joints, tenderness or pain when touching a joint, problems while movement, and warmth and redness in the joint. Older citizens are at a greater risk for arthritis due to the weakening of bones.
With age, the large arteries of the heart become stiff. This leads to hardening of the arteries and is known as arteriosclerosis. It also leads to high blood pressure due to which hypertension occurs. With age, plaque builds up inside the wall of the arteries resulting in hardening and narrowing of arteries. This limits the flow of oxygen-rich blood to reach the organs and other parts of the body. With time, the muscles of the heart become weak or damaged which can result in heart failure. Other changes that occur in the heart due to aging are arrhythmias which include rapid, slow, or irregular heartbeat.
