I've been diagnosed with L5 S1 disc herniation and initially couldn't walk but now I can manage around 10 minutes. My neurologist recommended surgery is it safe to go through with it? How many days would I need to stay in the hospital and what's the approximate cost? I'm 25 years old.

If your disc is very bad and you are unable to walk or losing muscle power in feet and/or losing control of your pee/poo then you will definitely need surgery. If medicines help control the pain and you are functional then you can avoid surgery and go for conservative methods

View allMy doctor recommended spine surgery but it's too expensive for us to afford right now I heard about schemes like NTR health seva that might help cover the costs but I'm not sure how they work or if they apply to this situation Could someone guide me on what options might be available for financial assistance with spinal procedures
If your spine surgery is recommended and deemed medically necessary but is too expensive, you could explore government schemes like NTR Vaidya Seva in Andhra Pradesh, or other similar initiatives in Maharashtra if applicable. These schemes can provide financial assistance or even cover the entire cost of certain procedures, but eligibility criteria and the specific procedures covered may vary

My dad is 59 and has had sciatica pain from a slipped disc between L4-L5 for 10 years. Doctors recommended surgery but said it might not last and could have lifelong risks, so we stuck with physio and meds. Now he's getting numbness and pain in his leg and fingers. Should we consider surgery now or keep trying physio and meds?
New numbness and worsening sciatica after long-term conservative care may indicate nerve compression—surgical decompression may now offer better relief and prevent damage.

I've had a slipped disc at L5 S1 for the past year and recently developed sciatic nerve compression on my left side. The EMG NV test confirmed nerve compression, and now I have swelling, numbness, and tingling in my left foot. My doctor recommended surgery, but I'm currently taking multivitamins, calcium, and methylprednisolone. Are there any alternative therapies that could help with recovery?
for P/E ORTHO specialist opinion is advised to the patient.
