My daughter who is 11 years old was diagnosed last month with prediabetes and hypothyroidism. This month the doctor asked for a blood test and a follow up. Should I get her HbA1C test done along with fasting and postprandial sugar tests or only one of them? Which test will help to check if there is any improvement in her sugar levels? The doctor has asked only to do TSH, LFT, and lipid profile and meet him. Since she is on 25mg Eltroxin medication, should I also check her sugar levels while doing the blood test? Please advise.

For a child with hypothyroidism on Eltroxin, it is wise to track sugar too. Since she was diagnosed prediabetic, do an HbA1c to get a 3 month average. This is better than just fasting/post meals. Also do the advised TSH, LFT, and Lipid Profile. Share reports with the pediatric endocrinologist for medication/diet adjustments.

Dr. Siri Suggests...

Take a HbA1c Test (Hemoglobin A1c) Test or Take a TSH Test (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) Test
