Introduction
Pregnancy is a beautiful journey, but it can also bring some uncomfortable challenges, one of the most common being heartburn. If you're experiencing a burning sensation in your chest or throat, especially after meals, you're not alone. Many expectant mothers go through this, and while it can be bothersome, there are ways to manage it effectively.
In this article, we’ll discuss what causes heartburn during pregnancy, common symptoms, simple home remedies and lifestyle changes and when to seek medical help.
Let’s dive in!
What Is Heartburn?
Heartburn, also known as acid reflux, is a burning sensation in the chest or throat caused by stomach acid flowing back into the oesophagus (the tube connecting your mouth to your stomach). During pregnancy, hormonal changes and physical pressure from the growing baby can make this more likely.

Why Does Heartburn Happen During Pregnancy?
Several factors contribute to heartburn in pregnant women:
1. Hormonal Changes
The hormone progesterone relaxes muscles, including the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), which normally prevents stomach acid from rising.
When the LES is relaxed, acid can escape into the oesophagus, causing that burning feeling.
2. Growing Baby & Pressure on the Stomach
As your baby grows, the uterus expands and pushes against the stomach.
This pressure can force stomach acid upward, leading to heartburn, especially in the second and third trimesters.
3. Slower Digestion
Pregnancy hormones slow down digestion, meaning food stays in the stomach longer, increasing the chances of acid reflux.
Common Symptoms of Heartburn During Pregnancy
You might experience:
A burning feeling in the chest or throat
Sour or bitter taste in the mouth (acid regurgitation)
Bloating or burping
Discomfort after eating, especially when lying down
Effective Home Remedies & Lifestyle Changes
The good news? You don’t have to suffer in silence! Here are some safe and natural ways to ease heartburn during pregnancy:
1. Eat Smaller, Frequent Meals
Instead of three large meals, try five to six smaller meals throughout the day.
Overeating puts extra pressure on the stomach, worsening heartburn.
2. Avoid Trigger Foods
Some foods and drinks can make heartburn worse. Limit or avoid:
Spicy foods
Tomatoes and citrus fruits (oranges, lemons)
Chocolate
Caffeine (coffee, tea, soda)
Fried or fatty foods
Onions and garlic
3. Stay Upright After Eating
Avoid lying down immediately after meals.
Wait at least 30 minutes to an hour before lying down or going to bed.
4. Sleep with Your Head Elevated
Use an extra pillow or raise the head of your bed slightly to keep stomach acid from rising.
5. Drink Milk or Yoghurt
A small glass of cold milk or a spoonful of yoghurt can help neutralize stomach acid.
6. Chew Gum
Chewing sugar-free gum increases saliva production, which can help wash away acid.
7. Wear Loose Clothing
Tight clothes around the waist can put pressure on your stomach, making heartburn worse.
8. Try Ginger or Chamomile Tea
Ginger has natural soothing properties.
Chamomile tea may help reduce acid reflux.
When to See a Doctor
While heartburn is common, consult your doctor if:
Home remedies aren’t helping
You experience severe pain or difficulty swallowing
You notice weight loss or vomiting
Symptoms disrupt your sleep or daily life
Your doctor may recommend pregnancy-safe antacids or other treatments.
Final Thoughts
Heartburn during pregnancy is uncomfortable but manageable. By making small changes to your diet and routine, you can reduce discomfort and focus on enjoying this special time.
