Nabothian Cyst: Overview of Causes and Treatment

Introduction

If you’ve been diagnosed with a Nabothian cyst or heard the term during a routine check-up, you might be wondering what it means and whether it’s something to worry about. The nabothian cysts are common, harmless, and usually don’t require treatment. However, understanding what they are, why they form, and when to seek medical advice can help ease any concerns.

What Is a Nabothian Cyst?

A Nabothian cyst is a small, fluid-filled lump that forms on the cervix (the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina). These cysts develop when the mucus-producing glands in the cervix become blocked. The mucus builds up inside the gland, creating a tiny, smooth bump.

Nabothian cysts are:

  • Non-cancerous (benign)
  • Common in women of reproductive age
  • Usually painless and harmless

What Causes Nabothian Cysts?

These cysts form due to blocked cervical glands. The exact reason for the blockage isn’t always clear, but possible causes include:

1. Childbirth – The cervix changes during delivery, which can trap mucus in the glands.
2. Surgery or Trauma – Procedures like a cone biopsy (LEEP) or cervical cauterisation can lead to cyst formation.
3. Hormonal Changes – Fluctuations in estrogen levels (e.g., during pregnancy or menopause) can affect cervical mucus production.
4. Chronic Cervicitis – Long-term inflammation of the cervix (due to infections or irritation) may contribute.

Symptoms of Nabothian Cysts

Most women with Nabothian cysts don’t experience any symptoms, and the cysts are often discovered during a routine pelvic exam or ultrasound. However, in rare cases, they may cause:

  • Mild discomfort (if the cyst is large)
  • Vaginal discharge (if the cyst ruptures)
  • Spotting after intercourse (if the cyst is irritated)

When to See a Doctor?

While Nabothian cysts are usually harmless, consult your doctor if you notice:

  • Persistent pelvic pain
  • Heavy vaginal bleeding
  • Foul-smelling discharge (could indicate infection)

Diagnosis and Treatment

How Are Nabothian Cysts Diagnosed?

Your doctor may detect them during:

  • Pelvic Exam – Feeling the cervix for lumps.
  • Ultrasound or MRI – If the cyst is large or looks unusual.
  • Colposcopy – A magnified view of the cervix if further examination is needed.

Do Nabothian Cysts Need Treatment?

Most Nabothian cysts don’t require treatment unless they cause discomfort or complications. If needed, options include:

1. Drainage – A doctor may puncture the cyst to release the fluid.
2. Electrocautery or Cryotherapy – Freezing or burning the cyst to remove it.
3. Surgical Removal – Rarely needed, only if the cyst is very large or infected.

Can You Prevent Nabothian Cysts?

Since they’re often a natural result of cervical changes, you can’t completely prevent them. However, maintaining good cervical health can help:

  • Regular Pap smears – To monitor cervical changes.
  • Safe Sex Practices – Reducing the risk of infections.
  • Prompt Treatment for Cervicitis – If you have chronic inflammation.

Final Thoughts

Nabothian cysts are common, harmless, and rarely cause concern. Most women are unaware that they have them. However, if you experience unusual symptoms, such as pain or abnormal discharge, it’s best to consult a doctor for peace of mind.
