Dengue Fever

Introduction

Dengue fever is a common mosquito-borne illness that affects millions of people every year, especially in tropical and subtropical regions. While most cases are mild, severe dengue can be life-threatening if not treated on time. Recognizing the signs and symptoms early can help you seek medical care promptly and recover faster.

In this article, we’ll discuss:

  • What dengue fever is
  • Common signs and symptoms
  • When to seek medical help
  • Prevention and management tips

What Is Dengue Fever?

Dengue fever is caused by the dengue virus, which spreads through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito (usually active during the day). There are four types of dengue viruses, and infection with one type does not guarantee immunity against the others.

Common Signs and Symptoms of Dengue Fever

Symptoms usually appear 4–10 days after a mosquito bite and can range from mild to severe. Here’s what to look out for:

1. High Fever (Sudden Onset)

  • One of the first signs is a sudden high fever (104°F or higher).
  • Fever may last for 2–7 days.

2. Severe Headache and Eye Pain

  • Intense headache, especially behind the eyes.
  • Pain worsens with eye movement.

3. Muscle and Joint Pain

  • Often called "breakbone fever" due to severe muscle and joint pain.
  • Commonly affects the back, arms, and legs.

4. Skin Rash

  • A red, spotty rash may appear 2–5 days after fever starts.
  • It can spread across the face, arms, legs, and chest.

5. Nausea and Vomiting

  • Loss of appetite, nausea, and vomiting are common.
  • Some may experience stomach pain.

6. Fatigue and Weakness

Extreme tiredness may last for weeks after recovery.

Warning Signs of Severe Dengue (Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever)

In some cases, dengue can become severe, leading to dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF) or dengue shock syndrome (DSS), which require immediate medical attention. Watch for:

  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Persistent vomiting (3+ times in 24 hours)
  • Bleeding gums or nosebleeds
  • Blood in vomit, urine, or stool
  • Rapid breathing or difficulty breathing
  • Cold, clammy skin
  • Extreme fatigue or restlessness

If you or a loved one experience these symptoms, seek emergency care immediately.

How to Manage Dengue Fever at Home (Mild Cases)

If symptoms are mild, follow these steps:

  • Stay Hydrated – Drink plenty of fluids (water, coconut water, ORS) to prevent dehydration.
  • Rest – Avoid physical strain; your body needs time to recover.
  • Pain Relief – Use paracetamol (acetaminophen) for fever and pain. Avoid aspirin or ibuprofen, as they can increase
    bleeding risk.
  • Monitor Symptoms – Keep track of fever, hydration, and any warning signs.

Preventing Dengue Fever

Since there’s no specific treatment for dengue, prevention is key:

  • Use Mosquito Repellents – Apply creams or sprays containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
  • Wear Protective Clothing – Long sleeves and pants reduce mosquito bites.
  • Use Mosquito Nets – Especially during daytime naps.
  • Eliminate Stagnant Water – Empty containers, flower pots, and coolers where mosquitoes breed.
  • Install Screens – Keep windows and doors screened to prevent mosquito entry.

When to See a Doctor?

If you suspect dengue, consult a doctor immediately if:

  • Fever lasts more than 3 days
  • Symptoms worsen after initial improvement
  • Signs of severe dengue appear (bleeding, severe pain, vomiting)

Early diagnosis through a blood test (NS1 antigen, IgM/IgG antibody test) can help manage the condition better.
