malaria

Malaria is a serious and sometimes life-threatening disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to humans through the bite of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. Recognizing the symptoms early can help in getting timely treatment and preventing complications.

In this article, we’ll explore the common symptoms of malaria fever, when to seek medical help, and how to prevent malaria.

Common Symptoms of Malaria Fever

Malaria symptoms usually appear 10-15 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. The symptoms can vary from mild to severe, depending on the type of malaria parasite and the person’s immunity.

1. High Fever with Chills

  • One of the most noticeable signs of malaria is a sudden high fever, often accompanied by shivering chills. The fever may come and go in cycles, rising and falling every 24 to 48 hours, depending on the type of malaria parasite.

2. Sweating and Fatigue

  • After the fever subsides, the person may experience profuse sweating, followed by extreme tiredness and weakness. This cycle of fever, chills, and sweating can repeat itself if malaria is left untreated.

3. Headache and Body Aches

  • Malaria often causes severe headaches, along with muscle and joint pain, making it difficult to carry out daily activities.

4. Nausea and Vomiting

  • Many people with malaria experience nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite, which can lead to dehydration and weakness.

5. Diarrhoea

  • Some individuals may develop loose stools or diarrhoea, which can be mistaken for a stomach infection.

6. Yellowing of Skin (Jaundice)

  • In severe cases, malaria can affect the liver, leading to jaundice, where the skin and eyes turn yellowish.

7. Anaemia (Low Red Blood Cells)

  • Malaria destroys red blood cells, leading to anaemia, which can cause pale skin, dizziness, and shortness of breath.

8. Confusion or Seizures (In Severe Cases)

  • If malaria affects the brain (cerebral malaria), it can cause confusion, seizures, or even coma. This is a medical emergency and requires immediate treatment.

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of these symptoms, especially after visiting a malaria-prone area, seek medical help immediately. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent severe complications.

How to Prevent Malaria?

Prevention is always better than cure. Here are some ways to reduce your risk:

1. Use Mosquito Repellents

  • Apply DEET-based repellents or use mosquito nets while sleeping.

2. Wear Protective Clothing

  • Cover your arms and legs with long-sleeved shirts and pants, especially during dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.

3. Keep Surroundings Clean

  • Stagnant water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Empty containers, clean water tanks, and use insecticides to keep mosquitoes away.

4. Take Anti-Malarial Medicines (If Traveling to High-Risk Areas)

  • If you are traveling to a malaria-endemic region, consult a doctor for preventive anti-malarial medications.

Final Thoughts

Malaria is a dangerous but preventable and treatable disease. Knowing the symptoms can help you act fast and avoid severe health risks. If you or a loved one shows signs of malaria, don’t delay; get tested and treated as soon as possible.
