Causes of Knee Pain Explained

Introduction

Knee pain is a common issue that affects people of all ages. Whether it’s a sharp, sudden pain or a dull, persistent ache, knee discomfort can interfere with daily activities like walking, climbing stairs, or even sitting for long periods. Understanding the causes of knee pain can help you take the right steps toward relief and recovery.

Common Causes of Knee Pain

Knee pain can stem from injuries, medical conditions, or wear and tear over time. Here are some of the most frequent causes:

1. Injuries

  1. Ligament Tears (ACL, MCL, PCL, LCL): Sudden twists or impacts (common in sports) can tear knee ligaments, leading to pain, swelling, and instability.

  2. Meniscus Tears: The cartilage (meniscus) that cushions the knee can tear due to sudden twisting movements, causing pain and stiffness.

  3. Fractures: A fall or accident can break the kneecap or other bones around the knee.

  4. Tendonitis (Jumper’s Knee): Overuse of tendons (common in runners and athletes) leads to inflammation and pain.

2. Arthritis

  1. Osteoarthritis (OA): The most common type, caused by wear and tear of cartilage over time, leading to stiffness and pain.

  2. Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA): An autoimmune disease that causes joint inflammation, swelling, and pain.

  3. Gout: A buildup of uric acid crystals in the joint, causing sudden, severe pain.

3. Mechanical Problems

  • Dislocated Kneecap: The kneecap (patella) slips out of place, causing sharp pain and difficulty moving.

  • Loose Body: A fragment of bone or cartilage breaks off and floats in the joint, causing locking or catching sensations.

  • Iliotibial (IT) Band Syndrome: Tightness in the IT band (a ligament running from hip to knee) causes outer knee pain, common in runners.

4. Other Medical Conditions

  • Bursitis: Inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs (bursae) that cushion the knee joint.

  • Infections (Septic Arthritis): Bacterial or viral infections can cause swelling, redness, and fever along with knee pain.

  • Osgood-Schlatter Disease: A growth-related condition in children and teens causing pain below the kneecap.

Symptoms to Watch For

Depending on the cause, knee pain may present with:

  1. Swelling and stiffness

  2. Redness and warmth

  3. Popping or crunching sounds

  4. Weakness or instability

  5. Difficulty straightening the knee

How Knee Pain Affects Daily Life

Untreated knee pain can lead to:

  1. Difficulty walking or standing for long periods

  2. Reduced mobility and flexibility

  3. Increased risk of falls

  4. Sleep disturbances due to discomfort

Tips to Manage Knee Pain

1. Rest and Ice

  • Avoid activities that worsen pain.

  • Apply ice packs for 15-20 minutes to reduce swelling.

2. Strengthening Exercises

  • Low-impact exercises like swimming, cycling, and yoga can strengthen muscles around the knee.

  • Physical therapy may help improve flexibility and stability.

3. Weight Management

Extra weight puts pressure on knees; maintaining a healthy weight reduces strain.

4. Proper Footwear

Wear supportive shoes to reduce stress on your knees.

5. Pain Relief Medications

Over-the-counter pain relievers (like ibuprofen) can help, but consult a doctor before long-term use.

6. Knee Braces or Supports

These can provide stability and reduce pain during movement.

When to See a Doctor

Seek medical help if you experience:

  1. Severe pain or swelling

  2. Inability to bear weight on the knee

  3. Visible deformity (knee looks out of place)

  4. Fever along with knee pain (possible infection)

Final Thoughts:

Knee pain is a common problem affecting all age groups; it may be due to injuries, medical problems or sometimes due to arthritis. It can be managed by medicines, weight management, etc. Visit an orthopaedic for further advice.
