PCOS

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal disorder that affects many women, often during their reproductive years. If you’ve been experiencing irregular periods, acne, weight gain, or excessive hair growth, you might be wondering if PCOS is the cause. Getting a proper diagnosis is crucial to managing symptoms and preventing long-term health complications.

In this article, we’ll guide you through the testing and diagnosis methods for PCOS, helping you understand what to expect and how to take the next steps toward better health.

What is PCOS?

PCOS is a hormonal imbalance where the ovaries produce higher-than-normal levels of androgens (male hormones). This can lead to:

  • Irregular or missed periods
  • Ovarian cysts (small fluid-filled sacs)
  • Excess facial or body hair (hirsutism)
  • Acne and oily skin
  • Weight gain or difficulty losing weight
  • Thinning hair on the scalp
  • Fertility issues

Since symptoms vary from person to person, proper testing is essential for an accurate diagnosis.

How is PCOS Diagnosed?

Doctors use a combination of medical history, physical exams, blood tests, and imaging to diagnose PCOS. There’s no
single test, so multiple checks are often needed.

1. Medical History & Symptom Review

  • Your doctor will ask about:
  • Your menstrual cycle (irregular, heavy, or absent periods)
  • Symptoms like acne, hair growth, or weight changes
  • Family history of PCOS or diabetes

2. Physical Examination

  • Weight and BMI check – PCOS is often linked to insulin resistance and weight gain.
  • Skin and hair assessment – Looking for acne, excess hair, or hair loss.
  • Pelvic exam – To check for any abnormalities in the ovaries.

3. Blood Tests (Hormonal & Metabolic Screening)

Blood tests help measure hormone levels and rule out other conditions like thyroid disorders. Key tests include:

  • LH (Luteinizing Hormone) & FSH (Follicle-Stimulating Hormone) – A high LH-to-FSH ratio is common in PCOS.
  • Testosterone & Androgens – Elevated levels suggest PCOS.
  • Insulin & Glucose Tests – To check for insulin resistance, a common PCOS complication.
  • Prolactin & Thyroid Tests – To rule out other hormonal imbalances.
  • Cholesterol & Triglycerides – PCOS can increase the risk of heart disease.

4. Ultrasound (Pelvic Sonography)

A transvaginal or abdominal ultrasound checks for:

  • Ovarian cysts (multiple small follicles)
  • Enlarged ovaries – A common PCOS sign

Note: Not all women with PCOS have visible cysts, and some healthy women may have cysts without PCOS. That’s why blood tests and symptoms are equally important.

Why Early Diagnosis Matters

If left untreated, PCOS can lead to:

  • Infertility – Due to irregular ovulation.
  • Type 2 Diabetes – Insulin resistance increases diabetes risk.
  • Heart Disease – High cholesterol and blood pressure are common.
  • Sleep Apnea & Depression – Linked to hormonal imbalances.

Early diagnosis helps manage symptoms and reduce long-term risks.

What If You’re Diagnosed with PCOS?

While there’s no cure for PCOS, lifestyle changes and medical treatments can help manage symptoms:

1. Diet & Exercise

  • Eat balanced meals – Focus on whole grains, lean proteins, and fibre.
  • Reduce sugar & processed foods – Helps control insulin resistance.
  • Exercise regularly – Even 30 minutes of walking daily improves hormone balance.

2. Medications (If Needed)

  • Birth control pills – Regulate periods and reduce androgen levels.
  • Metformin – Improves insulin sensitivity.
  • Fertility treatments – If trying to conceive.

3. Regular Check-ups

  • Monitor blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure.
  • Keep track of menstrual cycles and symptoms.

When to See a Doctor?

If you notice:

  • Irregular or absent periods
  • Unexplained weight gain
  • Excessive hair growth or acne
  • Difficulty getting pregnant

Final Thoughts

PCOS is manageable with the right diagnosis and care. If you’re experiencing symptoms, don’t hesitate to get tested. A healthy lifestyle and medical support can make a big difference in your well-being.
