The monsoon brings an end to the dry spell and scorching heat of summer days. It is the much-awaited season of change for all of us.  With the advent of the monsoon, the rain refreshes and rejuvenates us. However, along with this freshness comes a wide range of health issues. The increasing humidity and fluctuating temperature can cause various infections and illnesses. It is very essential for mothers and pregnant women to take extra precautions during this season in order to take care of the family. Specific basic steps can be followed to safeguard our health and boost our immune system.

Health Issues During Monsoon

The freshness and cooler temperatures of the monsoon are pretty enjoyable, but this season also brings in a spike in bacterial and viral infections. Monsoon is the ideal time for viruses and bacteria to multiply in stagnant water, increasing the risk of diseases. A few of the typical monsoon diseases are:

1. Dengue

It is a viral infection caused by the dengue virus, spread by infected Aedes mosquitos, Dengue is characterised by mild flu and severe illness, including dengue hemorrhagic fever.

Remedy - No such specific antiviral treatment; paracetamol and acetaminophen is recommended to reduce pain.

2. Common cold and Influenza

The increased humidity is the reason for respiratory infections that include common cold and influenza. Nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, persistent cough, mild to high fever, muscle ache are the common symptoms.

Remedy - Gargling with salt water, steam inhalation, hot showers, and intake of plenty of fluids helps in fighting the infection. Herbal tea, soups and broths might soothe the throat.

3. Malaria

This disease is caused by Plasmodium parasites and is transmitted to humans through bites of infected mosquitoes. The infected individual experiences fevers and chills, headache, gastrointestinal issues and aches

Remedy- Antimalarial drugs are used. Plenty of fluids and adequate rest is recommended.

4. Leptospirosis

It is a bacterial infection commonly caused through water contamination by the excretion of infected animals. This disease is characterised by high fever, severe chills, nausea, vomiting, muscle pain and jaundice at times.

Remedy- Antibiotics are used along with pain relievers.

5. Typhoid

This is a type of fever caused by Salmonella Typhi infection. The chief source of transmission is through contaminated water and food. Patients experience fever lasting for several weeks, headaches, abdominal pain and loss of appetite.

Remedy- Antibiotics, plenty of water along with simple, home-cooked, small portions of repeated meals is recommended.

6. Jaundice

This is a viral infection that affects the liver. This condition is characterised by high levels of bilirubin in the blood resulting in yellowing of the skin and eyes. This disease particularly breaks out in the monsoon due to contaminated water and food.

Remedy- Nutritious diet, adequate fluid intake and plenty of rest is recommended for speedy recovery.

7. Cholera

The most common illness during the monsoon typically spreads through contaminated water and food. People suffering from it experience watery stool, frequent vomiting, dehydration and fatigue.

Remedy - Boiled or filtered water and ORS are recommended for rehydration. Depending on the severity of the symptoms, antibiotics and IV fluids might be required.

8. Fungal Infections

Another common infection of the season is fungal infection. This is caused due to increased humidity and dampness in the air which accelerates the fungal growth. Persistent itching, red patches on the skin, scaly/peeling skins are some of the common symptoms.

Remedy - Antifungal creams, lotions and tablets help in treating this condition. Keeping the affected area clean and dry prevents further spread of infection.

Diet to Stay Healthy During Monsoon

The monsoon can cause many indigestion problems and compromise our health during the season. Due to its damp and filthy conditions, monsoon plays the role of a host. A weak immune system can instantly attract these diseases. As a mother, it is very important to take care of one's own health in order to nurture the child.  As a countermeasure to avoiding the diseases, one must maintain a comprehensive diet plan to stay well-hydrated and healthy.

  • Seasonal fruits- Eating seasonal fruits like apples, jamuns, litchi, plums, cherries, peaches, pears and pomegranates can improve the immune system.

  • Avoiding Sour food- Sour foods like tamarind, tomatoes and lime promote water retention. Such foods should be avoided.

  • Intake of boiling or purified water- The chances of water contamination are considerably higher in monsoon. Hence preference should be given to intake of purified or boiled water.

  • Steamed food- Raw foods like salad, should be avoided during monsoon. Instead we should adhere to steamed or cooked food.

  • Avoiding street food- Street food, junk food and pre-cut food should be avoided completely in monsoon.

  • Ideal drinks- Herbal teas, including ginger, pepper, honey, mint and basil contain antibacterial properties and are ideal for monsoon as they boost the immune system.

  • Washing vegetables- Mothers need to be extra vigilant about getting infected through contamination. Washing vegetables thoroughly with clean water removes dirt, pests, bacteria and residual pesticides.

Importance of Hydration in Monsoon

The soothing atmosphere of monsoon is welcomed by all but it can equally affect our hair, skin and overall health. Keeping ourselves hydrated is the key to staying healthy even if it is wet outside. Pregnant women have an increased thirst during their pregnancy journey and they can lose a considerable amount of water due to higher humidity levels. Sufficient Water intake flushes out toxins from the body, supports the immune system and reduces the hair and skin dryness. Water-rich foods, flavored water and electrolytes should be included to boost immunity.

Drinking safe water- Heavy rains often cause overflooding of rivers, lakes and reservoirs. This can contaminate drinking water and add various pathogens and pollutants into the water supply. We must purify or resort to boiled drinking water to ensure a healthy gut and protect against waterborne diseases.

Natural Immunity Booster During Monsoon

Prioritising a healthy diet is essential to boost the immune system naturally. Foods enriched with Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Omega 3 Fatty acids, Antioxidant rich foods are good for our body. Intake of probiotics improves our gut lining, restricts the growth of bacteria and promotes a healthy body.

Monsoon Dressing Ideas for Mothers

Resorting to the right fabric is the key to enjoying comfortable clothing. When it comes to mothers, extra attention should be given to dressing ideas as dressing up with a newborn/infant/toddler might be tricky at times.

  • The fabric should allow the skin to breathe and should be non-sticky considering the outside wet condition.

  • Waterproof footwear instead of heels and sneakers can be the best solution to keep the feet moisturized and keep away infections.

  • Layering oneself with rain jackets, scarves and shrugs not only makes it easy to move around but keeps the hand free from umbrellas to catch hold of the young ones.

  • Choosing short dresses over gowns ensures cleanliness and avoids messing up wet and muddy clothes.

  • Monsoon is the season of minimal jewellery. Wearing heavy ornaments and jewellery can easily get tarnished and cause irritation due to humidity. Monsoon is the season of minimal jewellery.

Basic Hygiene Practices During Monsoon

It is significantly important to maintain cleanliness and hygiene during monsoon. Monsoon brings in a lot of rain which may result in water stagnation. Effective hygiene practices are important to stay away from waterborne diseases and contamination. Drainage and water systems should be regularly cleaned to prevent water logging and stagnation. Stagnant waters in flower pots, unused vessels, and old tires should be removed to avoid breeding of mosquitos. Dumping of garbage under open air should be avoided during monsoon. We should adhere to drinking purified or boiled water to ensure zero contamination. Proper ventilation reduces humidity and prevents mould growth, floors should be cleaned and disinfected to avoid bacterial and viral infection.

Importance of Physical Activity in Monsoon

Monsoon might be a challenging season to those engaged in outdoor physical activities. However, this is a season of respite from the hot and scorching sun. One should enjoy and relax in this season. Engaging in any form of physical activity be it indoor or outdoor play enhances physical fitness and overall well-being. Staying active improves cardiovascular health, strengthens the bone and muscles, helps in making better sleep patterns and works on improving the immune system.

Effect of Monsoon on Our Mental Health

Monsoon has a remarkable effect on our mental well-being and mood status. It is a season that triggers headaches and mood swings. It can trigger different feelings amongst people. While many enjoy the advent of rain, many of us experience a feeling of sadness and tiredness. The reduced sunlight during this season can impact the serotonin levels which in return contributes to mood swings. For many, the disruption in daily workout and outdoor activities increases anxiety, stress and depression. Due to the increased level of humidity and poor air quality, many individuals experience respiratory issues which further influences the mood.

  • Managing stress- Staying hydrated is essential to boost the immune system. Exposure to sunlight whenever possible can adequately provide Vitamin D and work as an immune booster. Adaptation to indoor physical activities can raise the endomorphin level and boost wellness. To deal with the mood swings, one can come up with a daily routine, creative activities and spend time with the loved ones.

  • Mental well beings and mothers- A child’s health depends on the maternal mental wellbeing. It is extremely important to take control of their mental health and prioritize their self-care. A happy mother can only raise a happy child after all.

 Conclusion

The refreshing monsoon brings with it an increased risk of various illnesses, primarily caused due to mosquito bites, poor hygiene, contaminations, higher humidity and fluctuating temperatures. Adopting certain preventive measures can significantly reduce the risk of falling ill during this season. However, it is crucial to stay vigilant and seek professional medical guidance if one experiences severe symptoms. Adapting to season friendly habits and clothing can add on to the comfort of enjoying the season. Embracing a diet rich in immune-boosting foods, you can stay healthy, ward off infections, and enjoy the monsoon season.
