The most common treatment for polycythemia vera is having frequent blood withdrawals, using a needle in a vein (phlebotomy). It's the same procedure used for donating blood. This decreases your blood volume and reduces the number of excess blood cells
About 70 percent of your body's iron is found in the red blood cells of your blood called hemoglobin and in muscle cells called myoglobin.
One can check with the doctor if excess red blood cells need to be removed from the body. Otherwise change in diet can also help in reducing high amounts of hemoglobin such as eating nuts and legumes daily.
Both the hemoglobin and the hematocrit are based on whole blood and are therefore dependent on plasma volume. If a patient is severely dehydrated, the hemoglobin and hematocrit will appear higher than if the patient had sufficient water. However, if the patient is fluid overloaded, they will be lower than their actual level.
Thrombocytopenia could be due to an increased platelet aggregation and adhesion caused by hyperviscosity. The marrow can no longer produces blood cells resulting in low levels of healthy, functioning red blood cells which causes anemia, platelets (thrombocytopenia) and white blood cells (leukopenia).
