Question
Hi doctor, recently we have undergone HB typing test before planning for the second child. The doctors suggested based on the results of the report to go for mutation test for alpha thalassemia. Please suggest is it really required to undergo this test as we have our first baby 7 years old healthy?

If one or both parents are suspected carriers of thalassemia, a genetic mutation test is advised regardless of the first childs health. It helps assess the risk for future children. It is a preventive step to ensure a healthy pregnancy.
