Question

I am 14 weeks pregnant and my blood report shows that I am an HbE carrier/trait. My doctor has advised that my husband also get tested. Does this mean I have thalassemia, and is my baby at risk? My hemoglobin is 10.5, and my HbA2 is elevated, possibly due to B12 deficiency and masked iron deficiency. Please advise.

HbE trait is a thalassemia variant. If your husband is also a carrier, baby may be at risk. He should take HPLC test.

Dr. Vasanthasree Suggests...

Take a HB Electrophoresis (HPLC) Test Test
