What could cause a false positive on a COVID-19 rapid test?
Rarely it could cause a false positive if you have not done the test correctly.

No they cannot tell if you have covid 19 in the past. One can do an antibody test
Rapid test cannot detect small amounts of virus. Wherease the PCR test can detect even small amount of virus and results in lesser chances of false negatives.
A PCR test can be inconclusive if the sample given is not enough or the person is close to recovery or has an early infection. In this case, one needs to wait for 48 hours and give the sample again for assesment.
