This test is used to diagnose chronic or acute hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. It also screens a previous, resolved hepatitis B infection or is sometimes used to monitor treatment. Hepatitis B is an infection of the liver caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). This test helps in detecting antibodies produced in response to an infection. The pattern of test results can identify a current active infection, establish if a patient has had past exposure to HBV or if a patient has developed immunity from vaccination.

    faqFrequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

    Frequently asked questions

HBV can spread through contact with blood or other body fluids from an infected person, and exposure to HBV may occur through sharing IV needles or unprotected sex. Mothers with active HBV infection can pass the infection to their babies during or after birth. The HBV virus does not spread through casual contact. However, the virus can stay outside the body for some time (up to 7 days), including dried blood, and can be spread by sharing razors or toothbrushes with an infected person.
Your doctor may order this test when you have risk factors for HBV infection or when you have signs and symptoms of this virus, such as unexplained elevated blood levels of ALT, or if you have jaundice.
There is no particular treatment for acute hepatitis B infections. The symptoms mostly treated with supportive care. Usually, doctors prescribe antiviral medications such as entecavir, interferon, tenofovir, lamivudine, and adefovir for chronic hepatitis B. However, few of these drugs can have serious side effects. Speak to your doctor for more information about hepatitis B treatment options.
