Lupus anticoagulant testing is a series of tests done to identify the presence of Lupus anticoagulants in the blood.
Lupus anticoagulants are autoantibodies produced by the immune system that mistakenly attack specific components of the body's cells. These autoantibodies may interfere with the blood clotting process and increase a person's chances of developing a blood clot.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How is the blood sample taken?
A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm to take the blood sample. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins, making it easy to collect the blood. The skin is cleaned before inserting the needle in the vein to prevent bacteria from entering. Needle is inserted into the vein of the arm and the blood sample is collected in the vacutainer.
Why is this test ordered?
Your doctor may order this test to help investigate the cause of a blood clot, to evaluate a prolonged partial thromboplastin time (PTT), as part of an evaluation for antiphospholipid syndrome, or to help determine the cause of recurrent miscarriages. However, these tests are not used to diagnose systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), commonly known as lupus, a chronic autoimmune disorder.
How can I get rid of lupus anticoagulant?
There is no cure for lupus anticoagulant. Still, if you experience signs and symptoms of LA, there are treatment options available that can help lower your risk of excessive clotting.
