About the test

TMT

What is TMT?

The TMT test, or treadmill test, is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure that assesses the heart's response to physical stress. During the test, the patient walks or runs on a treadmill while their heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, and ECG are continuously monitored. The treadmill's speed and incline gradually increase, causing the heart to work harder and pump more blood.

This controlled stress on the heart helps doctors identify any abnormalities in heart function, such as reduced blood flow to the heart muscle (ischaemia) or irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias). By analyzing the patient's performance and vital signs during the TMT test, doctors can diagnose various heart conditions and determine the most appropriate treatment plan.

How to Prepare for TMT?

Dos:

  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and suitable footwear, preferably shoes, for walking or running on the treadmill.
  • Inform your doctor about any medications you are currently taking, as some may need to be temporarily discontinued before the TMT test.
  • Discuss any existing health conditions or concerns with your doctor before the cardiac TMT test.
  • Arrive at the testing facility well-rested and hydrated.

Don'ts:

  • Don't engage in strenuous physical activities or exercise on the day of the TMT test.
  • Don't consume heavy meals within 2-3 hours before the TMT for a heart test, as this may affect your heart rate and blood pressure.
  • Don't drink caffeine or smoke cigarettes for at least 2 hours before the test, as these substances can influence your heart's response to exercise.
  • Don't wear excessive jewellery or accessories that may interfere with the monitoring equipment.

Why is TMT Recommended ?

TMT test is commonly recommended  for several reasons, including:

  • Evaluating chest pain or discomfort that may be related to heart disease.
  • Assessing the effectiveness of treatments for heart conditions, such as medications or surgeries.
  • Determining the safety of starting an exercise program, particularly for people with a history of heart problems or risk factors.
  • Diagnosing coronary artery disease, which is characterized by the deposition of plaque in the arteries of the heart.
  • Identifying exercise-induced arrhythmias or abnormal heart rhythms that may not be apparent at rest.
