MCV Blood Test

Introduction

When you go for a blood test, you may come across terms like MCV (Mean Corpuscular Volume) in your report. If you're unsure what it means or why it matters, don’t worry—this article will help you understand everything in simple terms.

What is the MCV Blood Test?

MCV stands for Mean Corpuscular Volume, which measures the average size of your red blood cells (RBCs). These cells carry oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body. The MCV test helps doctors determine whether your RBCs are normal in size or if they are too large or too small, which can indicate different health conditions.

What is the Normal Range for MCV?

The normal range for MCV is typically between 80 and 100 femtoliters (fL). Here’s what different MCV levels may indicate:

  • Low MCV (below 80 fL): Suggests smaller-than-normal RBCs, possibly due to iron deficiency anaemia or chronic diseases.
  • Normal MCV (80–100 fL): Indicates healthy-sized RBCs.
  • High MCV (above 100 fL): Means larger-than-normal RBCs, which may be due to vitamin B12 or folate deficiency, liver disease, or alcoholism.

Why is the MCV Test Important?

Your doctor may order an MCV test as part of a Complete Blood Count (CBC) to check for:

  • Anaemia (low red blood cells)
  • Nutritional deficiencies (like vitamin B12 or iron)
  • Chronic illnesses (such as kidney or liver disease)
  • Bone marrow disorders

Symptoms of Abnormal MCV Levels

If your MCV is too high or too low, you may experience:

  • Low MCV Symptoms (Microcytic Anaemia)
  • The symptoms include:
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Pale skin
  • Shortness of breath
  • Brittle nails

High MCV Symptoms (Macrocytic Anaemia)

  • The symptoms include:
  • Fatigue
  • Tingling in hands and feet (due to B12 deficiency)
  • Memory problems
  • Loss of appetite

What Causes Abnormal MCV Levels?

Low MCV Causes

  • Iron deficiency anaemia (most common)
  • Chronic diseases (kidney disease, infections)
  • Thalassemia (a genetic blood disorder)
  • High MCV Causes
  • Vitamin B12 or folate deficiency
  • Alcohol abuse
  • Liver disease
  • Hypothyroidism

How to Improve Your MCV Levels?

If your MCV is abnormal, your doctor will guide you on the next steps. However, some general tips include:

  • For Low MCV (Iron Deficiency)
  • Eat iron-rich foods (spinach, red meat, lentils, fortified cereals).
  • Take vitamin C (helps iron absorption).
  • Avoid excessive tea/coffee with meals (they block iron absorption).
  • For High MCV (B12/Folate Deficiency)
  • Consume foods rich in B12 (eggs, dairy, fish, meat).
  • Include folate-rich foods (leafy greens, beans, citrus fruits).
  • If vegetarian, consider B12 supplements after consulting a doctor.

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience persistent fatigue, dizziness, or unusual symptoms, consult a doctor. An abnormal MCV may require further tests like:

  • Iron studies
  • Vitamin B12 and folate tests
  • Liver or kidney function tests

Final Thoughts

Your MCV level is a small but important part of your overall health. If your test results are outside the normal range, don’t panic—many causes are treatable with diet changes or supplements.
