High hemoglobin levels are most often caused by low oxygen levels in the blood (hypoxia), present over a long period of time. Common reasons include undiagnosed medical conditions such as bone marrow disease that causes abnormal increase in red blood cells (polycythemia vera) and heart diseases. In addition, certain medications can also hamper with hemoglobin levels.
