Got into an accident and my knee is swollen with pain - attached the report. Do I need surgery or will plaster be enough to fix it?

I'm dealing with spine TB and have been on ATT with complete bed rest for about four months now. I've started doing some cycling for 30 minutes because I really want to lose weight, but I'm wondering if this is a good choice since I sometimes feel pain in my spine area. My mom is 64 and has osteoporosis with knee pain in both legs. She had an accident 10 years ago and still has a rod in her left thigh that runs from the upper thigh to just above the knee. I'm wondering if the rod needs to be removed before she gets knee replacement surgery. Also, the doctor suggested replacing both knees what are the risks and success rates for someone with her condition?
