Hi Doctor, hope you are doing well. I am asking this question for my friend. Her mom passed away due to ovarian cancer last year. What is her daughters (31 years) risk of developing cancer and what precautions can she take to reduce the risk of developing one? Is there any test available for checking the risk factors? Please guide us on this. Thanks.

A woman whose mother had ovarian cancer may have a slightly higher genetic risk, especially if other family members had related cancers. Risk does not mean certainty many live healthy lives with proper screening. A BRCA1/BRCA2 genetic test can help assess inherited risk. She should also have routine pelvic exams and ultrasounds, even if asymptomatic.
Dr. Siri Suggests...
Take a BRCA1 & BRCA2 DELETION/DUPLICATION ANALYSIS Test or Take a CA - 125 Test Test

View allI recently had a USG, which showed a 44 x 46 x 43 mm thick walled cyst with dense internal debris in the right adnexa, and the right ovary was not separately seen. The left ovary is bulky with multiple unilocular follicular cysts of approximately 14 to 16 mm, and both the left ovary and the cyst appear adherent to the uterus. The left ovary measures 38 x 34 x 36 mm with a volume of 25.8 cc. Following my doctor advice, I did a CA 125 test, which came out to 40.7 U/ml. My doctor mentioned there is nothing to worry about and suggested taking Vissane 2 g for the next six months. I am 27 years old, recently married, and not planning a family for the next two years. I would like to know if my condition is serious, whether it can lead to infertility, and what the most optimum treatment is at this moment?

I have some questions regarding the CA 125 test. I would like to know if it is used only to diagnose ovarian cancer, or if it can indicate other conditions as well. Are there any specific instructions to follow before taking this test? Also, if the blood is drawn on the third day of the menstrual period, will it affect the results? I have my test report and would like help interpreting what it indicates.

I have a chocolate cyst in my left ovary measuring 5.5 cm, which has been present for the past 6 months. My periods are regular and normal, and my CA 125 cancer test is also normal. However, the cyst is complex. Could you please advise if there is any chance that this cyst could become cancerous?
