I've been dealing with this intense itching on my butt for the past 10 days, and it's not the first time I've experienced it. It seems to disappear on its own eventually, but I'm noticing a pattern where there's no visible rash or anything on my skin. However, when I do scratch, the area gets swollen and itches even more. Any idea what could be causing this or how I can get some relief?

Severe itching on the buttock can be frustrating and uncomfortable.

Possible Causes

  1. Anal Itching (Pruritus Ani): This is a common condition characterized by intense itching around the anus. It can be caused by various factors, such as skin irritation, allergies, or infections.
  2. Contact Dermatitis: This is a skin reaction that occurs when you come into contact with an allergen or irritant. It can cause itching, redness, and swelling.
  3. Fungal Infections: Fungal infections like candidiasis or ringworm can cause itching, redness, and swelling in the affected area.
  4. Hemorrhoids: Hemorrhoids can cause itching, discomfort, and swelling in the anal region.
  5. Skin Conditions: Certain skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, or seborrheic dermatitis can cause itching and inflammation in the affected area.

What to Do

  1. Avoid Scratching: Try to resist the urge to scratch the affected area, as this can lead to further irritation, swelling, and infection.
  2. Keep the Area Clean: Maintain good hygiene by washing the area with mild soap and water. Pat dry, don't rub.

I'm really puzzled here. A while back, I got diagnosed with candidal balanitis and tried Flucan and Terbicip, which cleared up the balanitis but left these persistent red lines around the crown of my glans. They itch randomly, sometimes in the center, sometimes on the sides, and it's been like this for six months. I even tried Valcivir with no luck, and its not getting worse or better. It's just constant itching without any sign of infection. It's been two months since I stopped taking any meds. What's going on with me? Hoping you can shed some light on this.

It sounds like you may be experiencing residual symptoms of candidal balanitis despite previous treatment. The red lines and itching sensation in the center and sides of the glans crown end may indicate ongoing inflammation or irritation. Since antifungal medications like Flucan (fluconazole) and Terbicip (terbinafine) did not have an effect, and antiviral medication like Valcivir (valacyclovir) also did not help, it is possible that the current symptoms may not be related to a fungal or viral infection. I recommend trying a mild topical steroid cream like hydrocortisone cream to help reduce inflammation and itching. Apply a thin layer to the affected areas twice a day for about a week. Additionally, keeping the area clean and dry, avoiding irritants like harsh soaps or perfumes, and wearing loose-fitting underwear made of breathable fabric may also help alleviate symptoms. If the symptoms persist or worsen despite these measures, it would be best to consult with a healthcare provider for further evaluation and management.

I've been dealing with acne scars and I'm breastfeeding my 5-month-old baby. I'm thinking about using tretinoin tretin 0.05% cream on my face to help with the scars and acne, but I'm really worried if this could affect my baby through breastfeeding. Is it safe for me to use this cream or should I avoid it while I'm nursing? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.

While tretinoin (Tretin 0.05%) is effective for acne and scars, it's not recommended for breastfeeding mothers, as it's a topical retinoid that can be absorbed into the bloodstream and potentially pass into breast milk, posing a risk to your 5-month-old baby; instead, consider alternative treatments, such as azelaic acid, salicylic acid, or glycolic acid, and consult your doctor or a dermatologist for personalized advice.
