My son was diagnosed with glue ear and the doctor recommended surgery. Is there any way to treat it with medication instead or are there other options we could try before going for surgery? I'm really worried about putting him through an operation.

Glue ear often resolves on its own. Try nasal decongestants, antihistamines, or wait 3 months if mild. Surgery (grommet insertion) is advised only if persistent or affecting hearing/speech.

My wife has a hole in her eardrum and we're really worried about surgery. Is there any way to heal it with just tablets or medicine, or does it have to be fixed with surgery? Can the hole close on its own without any procedure?

In many cases, a hole in the eardrum (perforation) heals on its own within a few weeks, especially if it's small. If it doesn't heal spontaneously, medical treatment might involve eardrum patches or surgery. Surgery, like tympanoplasty, is typically considered if the eardrum doesn't heal naturally or if there are complications like hearing loss or chronic infections
