My mom is 60 and has perforated eardrums. The doctor said surgery isn't an option at her age and only medicines can help. How serious is this and can it be completely cured with just meds?

I'm dealing with a recurring ulcer that always seems to pop up in the same spot, and it's getting pretty big.
