How is the blood sample taken?
A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm to take the blood sample. You need to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins, making it easy to collect the blood. The skin is cleaned before inserting the needle in the vein to prevent bacteria from entering. Needle is inserted into the vein of the arm and the blood sample is collected in the vacutainer.
When this test is ordered?
Your doctor may order an ACTH test if your cortisol test reveals abnormal results and if you have signs or symptoms of excess or deficient cortisol.
Does you need any special preparation for this test?
No special preparation is required for this test. You need to provide a blood sample for this test. The healthcare provider may request you fast overnight before undergoing this test. Usually, the blood sample is collected in the morning at about 8 a.m.
