The Anti thyroglobulin antibody test is also known as thyroid antibodies or thyroid autoantibodies or thyroperoxidase antibody test. This test helps to diagnose and monitor diseases of the thyroid that are autoimmune. It also helps to distinguish autoimmune thyroid diseases from other forms of thyroid diseases. The Anti thyroglobulin antibody test is done: • In case of goiter (enlarged thyroid gland) • In case of thyroid dysfunction • In case of abnormal reports of free or total T3, free T4, TSH, and thyroglobulin • To monitor the treatment of autoimmune thyroid diseases

faqFrequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

To take the blood sample, a tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is asked to make a fist. This helps in the buildup of blood filling the veins and it becomes easy to collect the blood. The skin is cleaned before inserting the needle in the vein in order to prevent bacteria from entering. The needle is then inserted into the vein in the arm and the blood sample is collected in the vacutainer.
Thyroid autoantibodies develop when the immune system itself of a person attacks against the components of the thyroid gland or thyroid proteins. This leads to chronic inflammation of the thyroid. The thyroid autoantibodies are seen in cases of autoimmune thyroid diseases.
The autoimmune thyroid diseases are those diseases that occur due to an attack of the body’s immune system on the thyroid gland. Examples of autoimmune thyroid diseases include Hashimoto thyroiditis, Grave’s disease, etc.
Grave’s disease is an autoimmune disorder. It causes an overactive thyroid gland that is hyperthyroidism. The immunes system of the body attacks the thyroid gland causing excessive production of thyroid hormone.
Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is also known by the name chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis. It leads to hypothyroidism. In this condition, there is a chronic inflammation of the thyroid gland.
