Calcium in urine tests determines the amount of calcium in the urine. Calcium is an essential mineral in our body. We need calcium for healthy bones and teeth. Calcium also aids in the functioning of nerves, muscles and the heart. A significant part of the body's calcium is stored in the bones. A small amount circulates in the blood; the remaining is filtered by the kidneys and excreted through the urine. Abnormal urine calcium levels indicate medical conditions, such as kidney disease or kidney stones, certain bone diseases and other medical problems.

Why do I need calcium in urine tests?

Your doctor will order calcium in a urine test, especially if you have symptoms and signs of a kidney stone such as severe back pain, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, blood in the urine, frequent urination. Also, your doctor may order calcium in urine tests if you have symptoms of a parathyroid disorder (high parathyroid hormone level) such as nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, fatigue, frequent urination, bone and joint pain.

How this test is performed?

Your doctor will ask you to collect all your urine for 24 hours, called a 24-hour urine sample test. The following steps are indicated for a 24-hour urine sample collection - Empty the bladder in the morning and flush that urine down; Avoid collecting this urine. Record the time; For the next 24 hours, store all the urine in a container provided by the laboratory technician; Store the urine container in a refrigerator; Return the urine sample container to the laboratory as instructed

How can I prepare for the test?

Your doctor may ask you to avoid certain foods and medicines for several days before going for this test. Also, he may provide you with any special instructions to follow before going for this test.

Does this test determines the calcium in bones?

A calcium in urine test does not determine the amount of calcium present in bones. Bone health can be measured with a bone density scan, or Dexa scan.
