The Rheumatoid factor (RA) - (Latex agglutination) test helps to diagnose the presence of an autoimmune disease such as Rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid factor is an autoantibody that is produced by the immune system of the body. This test helps to detect the levels of Rheumatoid factor in the blood. How is the blood sample taken?
To take the blood sample, a tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is asked to form a fist. This helps in the buildup of blood filling the veins and it becomes easy to collect the blood. The skin is cleaned before inserting the needle in the vein in order to prevent bacteria from entering. After cleaning, the needle is inserted into the vein in the arm and the blood sample is collected in the vacutainer.

Rheumatoid arthritis occurs when the bodys immune cells fail to recognize the lining of membranes surrounding the joints (synovium) as self. The immune cells attack the synovium resulting in inflammation of the joints which further can result in the destruction of cartilage and bone of that joint.

The symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis include joints that are tender, warm, or swollen; stiffness in joints especially in mornings, fatigue, fever, and loss of appetite.
