I am a 29 year old female and recently received my blood report showing a TSH level of 6.7. I consulted a doctor who prescribed Thyronorm 50 mcg. When I asked about the duration of treatment, he mentioned it could be for 1 year, 2 years, or possibly lifelong. I have been under significant stress for the past two months due to some family issues. Is it possible that stress caused my TSH to rise? Should I start the medication now, or would it be better to retest after a month to see if the TSH levels change? My cholesterol, blood pressure, and other tests are normal.

A TSH of 6.7 indicates mild hypothyroidism. Stress can affect thyroid levels, but not usually to this extent. Since your doctor has advised medication, it is best to start and monitor with repeat tests. You can discuss a retest in 6 to 8 weeks if unsure.
