My wife is pregnant and has been experiencing severe vomiting throughout the day, unable to eat or drink anything. We went to the hospital, and she received IV fluids with a pain injection. Her blood sugar level is normal, but her report shows ketones. Why do ketones occur during pregnancy? Is this temporary? Will it harm the baby? How can we get rid of it? Please advise

Ketones appear when body breaks fat due to lack of food intake. In pregnancy, this can be due to hyperemesis gravidarum. IV fluids and antiemetics help. Small frequent meals, bland diet, and hospitalization if severe. Usually temporary but needs monitoring. Obstetric opinion if needed

Dr. Yusuf Suggests...

Take a URINE KETONES (RANDOM) Test or Take a Electrolytes Test Test
