I've been smoking for almost 15 years but quit recently because I've been dealing with frequent coughs and colds. I'm worried about what damage smoking might have done to my lungs. Are there specific tests I should get done to check on the health of my lungs? Could you also tell me if there's a way to help them recover from the damage? And I'm curious, does a chest X-ray actually show the damage clearly?

My mom struggles with coughing a few times a year, and the doctor said it might be asthma or allergic bronchitis. I'm trying to understand this better.
