Hi, I am a 20 year old female recently diagnosed with a very low vitamin D level, my 25(OH) Vitamin D (total) result was less than 8.0 ng per mL, based on a blood test done around 4 months ago. I was advised to take Vitamin D3 60,000 IU once a week for 2 months. However, since I also have vitiligo and am currently undergoing depigmentation treatment, I strictly avoid sun exposure. I have heard that in such cases, a longer term vitamin D supplement may be necessary. Could you please guide me on how much vitamin D I should be taking daily in my situation? Also, should I be taking magnesium supplements alongside, and if so, in what dosage?

With severe deficiency and sun avoidance, long term maintenance may be needed. After initial course, take 2000 to 4000 IU daily and magnesium (200 to 300 mg) if not contraindicated.

Dr. Siri Suggests...

Take a 25-HYDROXY VITAMIN D (D2+D3) Test or Take a MAGNESIUM - SERUM Test

I am a working woman living alone in Mumbai with rotational shifts (morning, day, and night), so I do not have a consistent routine. Recently, I visited my hometown for almost a month. I saw a general physician who did a full body check-up and tests. My reports are mostly normal, except for Vitamin D deficiency and a small functional cyst in my right ovary. My doctor said this cyst is common in women and usually resolves after 2 to 3 menstrual cycles. I have not had regular periods for the past 7 months. Once, my cycle was delayed by 21 days, but normally the interval is 6 days or longer. I do not have facial hair, but after using a Flawless trimmer for women once, I developed cystic acne, especially around the jawline and smile lines. I also experience mild depression, stress, anxiety, and fatigue. Could you please advise what could be causing these issues, and what steps I should take next?

I was diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis with liver cirrhosis in 2015. I weigh 65 kg and am taking Omnacortil 10 mg and Azoran 50 mg. I often feel nauseated and full, and I have not been able to gain weight. Recent reports show no signs of cirrhosis, but autoimmune hepatitis persists. Blood tests reveal a vitamin D deficiency. I experience constant muscle weakness and pain in my leg muscles and bones. Is this situation serious? How can I recover from the vitamin D deficiency, and what steps should I take to improve my muscle strength and overall health?
