Is surgery the only option or are there other treatments I could try first? The pain is really affecting my daily life and I'm worried about going under the knife

My dad has a herniated disk at L5 S1 and the doctor is recommending minor surgery. Is surgery really necessary or can it be treated with just medicines? The doctor said the slipped disk is pressing on a nerve going to his left leg, which is causing back pain and loss of sensation in that leg. I'm worried what would be the best approach?

Disecectomy at l5-S1 is advised ,ortho opinion also advised to the patient.
