Question

My mother is 63 years old. Her recent thyroid test results are: T3: 0.90 ng/mL T4: 3.10 microgram/dL TSH: 75.10 mIU/L She is also a patient of multiple myeloma and is taking Lenangio 20 mg. Could you please suggest the appropriate thyroid medication for her and how it should be taken? Thank you.

Your mothers thyroid report shows severe hypothyroidism. TSH is very high, and T3/T4 are low. She needs to start Levothyroxine (Thyronorm/Eltroxin), usually 25 to 50 mcg once daily, on an empty stomach, 30 minutes before breakfast. However, because of her age and multiple myeloma treatment, the dose should be started low and adjusted slowly by her doctor. Repeat TSH after 6 to 8 weeks to monitor response.
